What is the
Smart Battery pilot?

Portland General Electric (PGE) launched its five-year Smart Battery pilot in 2020. Through this program, PGE partners with residential customers who have home battery storage systems. Once installed, battery storage will help create a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) that includes storage which can be operated individually or combined to serve the grid, adding flexibility that supports our transition to a cleaner energy future.

Learn about VPPs here.

How does the Smart Battery pilot work?

PGE will schedule times for your battery stored power to be dispatched to provide energy at times of peak energy usage, when prices are higher and electricity supply may be more carbon intensive about 10-15 times per year.

You always have the option to opt out of these peak time events so that your batteries remain fully available to you during a power outage.

Note: To be enrolled in the Smart Battery pilot you must provide a minimum capacity of 3 kWh.

Benefits

Earn Bill Credits

Homeowners have the ability to choose the amount of energy discharged to PGE during a scheduled peak time event and earn bill credits of $1.70 per kWh per event.

The amount of bill credit earned during each Peak Time Event depends on the actual amount of energy your battery provides during the event.

Make Your Impact Go Further

Optimize your solar production by storing excess energy in the battery and use it to power your community, providing reliable and low-cost power to your community.
